Did anybody happen to see this show last evening (the one broadcast on 1/13/09)? In the opening teaser, a teenage boy was found dead in the woods. Next to his body was a twig woven into the shape of a pentagram. The lead character, when he picked the thing up, identified it as "black magic." Even I know that's not right. They had a spacey young woman who claimed to be a Witch on the show, and she said she had put a "killing spell" on the kid, but said she didn't kill him (and she didn't).

I missed it because there was a Blues hockey game on. Pity we didn't win. Again.
Damn. And I used to kinda like that show...
Doesn't surprise me, though. The pentagram and pentacle have been associated with anti-Christian sentiment for a very long time, and ignorant people (well, I should say "unenlightened", but I'm pissy) keep perpetuating ridiculous stereotypes as long as there's a buck to be made from it.
When we see a well-written sitcom about a coven or a few solitaires that doesn't stoop to the cheap joke at their expense, THEN we'll know the climate's changing. Witness Will and Grace. Gay culture became kind of hip after that show. Until that sort of thing happens to us, we'll be considered "counter culture" instead of a culture that runs right alongside the rest.
Why do I suddenly want yogurt? ;-)

Well, I didn't actually watch it either. We turn on NCIS so I can ogle Abby and EK can ogle Denozo(sp), or Gibbs, or McGee, or hell, I dunno, Ziva... She claims she's not actually ogling anyone, just watching the show. Me, I watch the show, but I'm not proud...I admit to ogling Abby... Either way, after that we pretty much shut down the tube and do family reading time for 30-60 minutes, where one of us reads aloud. Of course, that didn't actually end up happening this past Tuesday because the munchkin had a re-scheduled Girl Scout meeting, so EK had to go pick her up and by the time they were home it was time for the kid to hit the sack... Was there a point behind my rambling here? I don't know... It's early and the coffee hasn't made it from my stomach to my brain just yet. Murv

Oh, I like NCIS too, Murv! It has taken me forever to tell McGee and DiNozzo (that's how the captions spell it) apart. They seem like interchangeable frat boy types. I do like Ziva and Abby. I like all the characters on this show because they're, well...interesting characters. And Starchild, I hear you about the cost of tvs! I recently had to replace my 20-year-old set, and the new one cost almost four figures (after the salesman talked me into a three-year service contract). This is only a 31.5" diagonal LCD set, but it's bigger than what I had. I like it, so I guess I'll pay for it. I guess the design on "The Mentalist" was actually a pentacle, not a pentagram. I should have remembered that. There was a stick attached to one of the points, so you could hold the stick and the pentacle would dangle from it with one point up. If I remember correctly, that makes it a pentacle. Thank you for the education, Murv.
