So ... People Suck
« on: June 01, 2008, 10:03:36 PM »

It's easier to cut and Paste from my blog than to rewrite ... so here you go.  Nascar race weekend just ended today ... well, the first race weekend of the year ...

Quote
Now ... it's no big secret that I hate race weekend here in Dover, but I also wanted to work in the center of the madness.  This blog is not going to be a rant on this weekend at all.  I got lucky enough to work back in the vault that deals with employees mostly and has very little customer contact, and on top of that, to get to the vault, I didn't even have to walk across the casino floor.  So yes, very little drunken, sweaty people contact for me this weekend.  I did, however, get to see some of the race.  Our breakroom is on track level and the whole wall toward the track is windows ... So, now I've seen a race, I saw the demolition of the cars at the start of the race, and I still don't see how it can be super interesting to sit there and watch cars go round in circles for 3 hours.  Yes, they go fast, but the novelty of that wears off after the first few laps that you see.

Anyway... to the point of this entry and the title... People Suck.

I was having a crappy day of Friday.  I got to work and promptly locked my keys in the car.  I had to wait outside for Mike to show up which took about half an hour since he still had a good 15-20 minutes left of his work day).  I got home, I was still grumpy... I ate and went to bed.  Saturday I woke up to the sound of Mike on the phone as he was coming in to wake me up.  He got a call from a credit monitoring service.  They wanted to know if we had made multiple gas purchases that morning at 2am-ish about 50 miles away.  We had both been in bed sleeping (or trying to in my case) at that time.  After a little half awake digging around, we found that my check card was missing (along with one of my credit cards which hadn't been used).  That sucked and was very upsetting.  I remember using it last on Wednesday.  I am glad that I didn't find out it was missing when I really needed to use it.

Mike called the bank to report the card lost/stolen and found that the credit monitoring service had already notified them and they had immediately put a stop on the card and started the process of getting us new cards.  He was told that we would not be liable for anything that they did with my card and that once we know the total amount, we should fax the info directly to the person he was talking to.  She had told him that if we went through the branch, it could take up to 10 days, but she could do it in a day or two.  We called the landlord and let him know rent was going to be late because of this and he was fine with that.  He didn't give us a hard time or anything.

We didn't know then how much had been used.  The two purchases in the northern part of the state we knew had happened, and when I checked the account, I saw one other had come through from here in Dover.  Today the rest came through.  I'm assuming, based on the amount and frequency of the purchases, whomever had my card decided to call all their friends and have them fill up their cars too.  There were 3-4 more in Dover, one a little further south and 2 up north.  They charged pennies less than $350.  I'm going to wait one or two more days to make sure nothing else comes through (since they all seem to be gas station purchases and they only charge $1 to get the pump started, then process it later for the full amount).

Hopefully it won't take too long to get the money back so that I can send the landlord this months rent.  I couldn't imagine being okay with doing something like this, but I guess I'm a decent sort of person.  I am glad that everyone involved has been doing everything they can to get this fixed.  It makes it so much easier to deal with.

((((((((((((((((((Crystal Rose))))))))))))))))

I feel your pain, as I've been there, too. I watched overnight via my internet banking site as almost five grand was leeched out of my bank account via the bank card's "credit card" feature. It was apparently picked up via some website and used to purchase various computer software programs online, as well as several airline tickets to and from various eastern countries (I remember Pakistan, Turkey, and India were featured). We were at the doors of the bank the next morning to put a stop to it. We didn't have a credit monitoring service, though; it was my keen eye on the bank balance via the internet that stopped it from being worse than it was. I caught my guy at about the same time your service caught your thief.

My landlord was extremely forgiving about the issue as well. At the time, I had my entire summer pay from my teaching job deposited in one lump sum at the beginning of the summer. They nearly sucked all of that dry. The bank we used was AWFUL. They made us feel like this was OUR fault, and the woman I was dealing with refused to even give us the few hundred dollars that were still in the account at the time we were in her office. I made a HUGE scene and demanded she give me my money, that she effectively close the account, and that I would tell everyone how I was being treated by her company. I got my way, but I make it a point of never using that bank for ANYTHING.

I often am shown how kind and gracious everyday people can be in this world. It's the faceless corporations (or those who live to serve those faceless corporations) who work their asses off to screw everyone over.

Various organized religions and government cronies fall squarely into that latter category.

I hope things move quickly and smoothly to get you out of that mess. And may the Gods smack down some HEINOUS tenfold return on those jerks.

Me too ... on both accounts ....

Mike came home today and asked if I wanted to go to the police and try to identify and press charges on the people that did it ... I'm sure they could find them with some digging since most gas stations have cameras watching the pumps ... But we are going to get our money back and in the grand scheme of things, the amount wasn't huge.  The bank will probably try to find the people since it's their money that will be lost otherwise.  I'm trying to find some information on stuff like this, but most websites list this stuff under identity theft ... it really isn't ... I dropped my card somewhere (most likely in the theater when we saw Indiana Jones) and was unlucky enough to have it picked up by some rotten people.

I didn't know that we had a credit monitoring service .. it certainly isn't anything that we were paying for .... I think the bank might have had it for stuff like this and I am glad that they did.  I wouldn't have been able to do anything about it until today if they hadn't called since the charges didn't come through until yesterday.  After reading your story, I'm glad our bank is a local bank ... they're old and established (I think they've been around for 110 years or so), but they never grew to be the big, giant company.

Based on the things that I've read online, it does seem like we should go to the police and at least file a report and get a case number and a copy of the report.  I have to work today when Mike's off and we want to give the account one more day to make sure nothing else shows up.  We should probably go tomorrow and do that.  The account that was hit is in both of our names, so we should both go.

more big hugs to you Crystal Rose.   Really sucks the suck out of suck.   Let's just hope the 3fold law becomes a gazillion fold law rightback at those thieves.   I'm glad tho you had a credit monitoring service that was so johnny on the spot prompt for you.

I hope it gets resolved soon....and those that took get what is coming.

Well I had a girl here at work, who acts like my best friend one moment and the next minute like screw you I can't stand you.

Than she acts like it never happened.  She will ask me how my weekend was and ignore anything I say and talk over me.  I got so pissed about everything with her I deleted her out of my cell phone, and figure screw you, if you wanna act like that, fine.

I completely understand your pain!
