whatever works for ya sugar :-) it's all about things being personal. perhaps one of these days i'll get my (i'm not gonna call it a book till it's a book) done. it's very hard to write though. i've got quite a pile spit out but i keep having to back track. seems every time i explain something i have to go back and re-explain something else. hard going, hats off to Dorothy.

Oh I truly agree about the personal.   one of the many reasons this path called to me and I chose to listen to the call and follow.   Each path is individual and unique and no 2 connections to the divine are alike...or wrong.

I'd read that book if ya published it Smiley

Murv

√⅓  is a typo.  I got no moonpie, but something considerably closer to a rather purple-looking wedge of gorgonzola cheese with what appears to be a lime flavored Dum Dum lollipop crammed into it at a 62o angle from horizontal.

And I wasted another damned frog, too.  Crap.

P.S.  When I get a chance to think, I'll share my altar pics and info re: my own personal trad.

Here's the setup I had for last night's eclipse.  I've been dealing with some horrendous health issues, so I did a bit of spellwork and took advantage of the alignment. Yeah, that's a picture of a spell "at work." Some people may have issues with that, but I see it differently and have no problem posting the pic. If you don't feel comfortable with it, please move along. If you don't have a problem, I'd appreciate a bit of positive energy directed at that candle there. I can use all the help I can get.

You can see that this "altar" is really a bit small. That's why I prefer to call it a "shrine" instead. I use it for spellwork if it's a simple spell and doesn't require major raising of energy. For stuff on a larger scale, I have to move tools and such to another room (or, if I can, I'll pop down to a sacred spot on my sister's property and do a working there). Since this one basically just required a dressed candle and some incense, I used the shrine space.  You can't see it, but I have a hanging incense censer near the spot, and it was going full-bore. (I need to change my decorations, too; fall is long gone. That's something I shall have to remedy forthwith!)

As for the "nitty gritty" about my particular trad, I consider myself a fairly strict Irish witch. That basically means my pantheon is strictly within the Irish mythos, and I tend to narrow it down even more and use only those gods and goddesses from the Ulster Mythological Cycle. Doesn't mean I don't acknowledge other gods and goddesses and respect them just as much; I just feel more comfortable working within the stories and folks mentioned in that particular cycle. They "speak to me" in a more personal way than other stories and gods. Some folks draw from any culture and pantheon that works for the moment--whatever works for you, I say. I feel more comfortable working within this very narrowed group, and since I feel that your faith really has to suit you and you alone, this suits me.

My patron god is Cuchulainn, and the goddess I deal with most often is The Morrigan. I mix religion and spellwork--some keep the two fiercely separate. If the gods I'm working with don't want to lend a hand for a spell, they won't. That's the way I see it, at least. YMMV. When I do spellwork, I am pretty careful about color, scent, planetary positioning, moon phase, and all that schtuff, which is why I'd call myself more ceremonial than most. My rituals tend to have very specific wordings (my "liturgy", if you will permit a word stolen from Catholicism), and I have most of them memorized.

I've "taught" a few folks some basic witchcraft stuff, and I have to smile at the different paths they've taken compared to my own. One's more shamanic than I am, one's following a considerably more gentle "kitchen/green witchy" type path, and another is moving into a more Eastern philosophy of religion. I think as long as that strong connection with the natural world is there, the rest of it falls into place depending on the individual.

That give you any more insight, dear?

Yes it does help...thank you everyone!

I'm not quite ready to make an altar, but I plan on working on it.  I can find a few things at the Goodwill store I'm sure.
