for me, I've probably read the Belgariad and the Mallorean 10 times or so ... they're written by David Eddings (with help from his wife as well since she's listed as co-author later in the series)
I don't know why I like them so much. They aren't a difficult read. They are fantasy, but the magic is "believable" for the world that the books take place in.

I like the Harrys -- Potter and Dresden. On the regular mystery side, Elizabeth Peters' hilarious "Amelia Peabody" series is big fun. Rita Mae Brown's "Mrs. Murphy" series is entertaining, if a bit uneven at times. I did tackle Tolkein's "LotR" series too. My goodness there's a bunch of detail there. My brother refused to talk with me about the movies until I had read the books, otherwise I would not have done so.

*chuckles* ... I love the HP series ... and about LotR ... I read all the books before the movies, but the first time that I picked up The Hobbit (read that before LotR) I think I got to about page 137 and just couldn't keep myself interested through all the detail. But, I went back and picked it up again when I heard that they were making movies and I breezed right through them. I think it must have been a mind set thing.
I need to start branching out with my reading. (which is kinda why I started this thread.)

You might try Judith Tarr, who also writes under Kathleen Bryan. Lots of alt-history, and lots of good fantasy. She's prolific, that one. Wish other favorite authors were so, too. *hint, hint*

Prolificness... Well, I've got a couple of grocery lists I can send your way... Actually, one of the things that put me behind schedule this year (besides traveling with that Morrison woman [lol]) is the fact that I was contracted to write a short story for an anthology. The anthology in question is due out from Apex in 2008. It is primarily horror based and the title (unless they change it at the last minute) is Courting Morpheus. I can't get into very much detail (part of the biz, you understand)...However, I CAN say that the short story I wrote for them is based on the RGI series, with Rowan and Ben being the major players in a pretty cool horror piece. Without spilling any beans I will say that it is written in such a manner as to leave their feet firmly planted in the "RGI universe", and doesn't screw up the series story arc. (i.e. It neither goes outside the bounds of the RGI "mythos", nor is it required reading to keep up with the actual series. It's completely standalone, but my hope is that it will draw some new fans to the series itself.) Of course, the anthology is horror, so I am sure there is likely to be some "splatterpunk" and the like between the covers. I haven't actually been privy to any of the other submissions, other than the standard "flash pieces" the publisher provides to all of the authors for continuity and setup. Not sure if anyone is interested in that sort of read, and I certainly wouldn't expect folks to buy it just because I wrote one of the pieces. However, I will be sure to post info as soon as I have a solid release date, etc, if anyone is interested. Murv

Well I love Harry Dresiden as well...I'm only on the 4th book now I think.
I also read the Mercy Series by Patricia Biggs Warriors by Erin Hunter (yes this is a YA book series, but I love it, its about cats and their lives, and honestly I miss having a pet)
I also read the Anita Blake series by LKH
I read alot about Vampires too. I love vampires. I currently ordered some books about the TV show Torchwood.

Have you read the "Southern Vampire" series by Charlaine Harris? That's some fun reading right there! My husband and my neighbor coined a hilarious term about those of us who enjoy the Harry Potter series: PottyHeads. *snort* The Dresden Files are really good books, too, although the last one (I forget the name...) didn't hold my interest as much as previous ones. Summer Knight is probably my fave of that series.

I know a lot of those! Incidentally, if you check out the acknowlegements page of Charlaine Harris, you'll see my name right up there at the top, quite near Murv's. I feel so cool right now! -The Lunatic, aka Tasialue, aka She Who Rocks the Latin!
